It's time to register for sports again! Wait, didn't I just do this? Register for some sort of sport. It seems as though it is a never ending proposition. This is one of the best (or worse) things about living in sunny Southern California. Truth is, we have a never ending sports season. If it's not one sport, it's another. I feel like I am constantly shuffling between one activity to another. Don't get me wrong, I love doing it and I love to watch my boys play their sports, but it would be nice if we could have a little breather.
A couple years ago our family came up with a plan. One sport per kid, per season. I noticed how frazzled I was becoming trying to be 3 places at once. Then I noticed how frazzled my kids were becoming. "That's it", I said. "This has to stop"! Now my boys pick one activity or sport per season. High school athletes often have one overriding concern: how do they look to college coaches? I currently work with several student athletes who are in the early stages of the recruiting process. But there’s another question I ask them that’s equally important: do they want to be a college athlete? They must understand what it means to commit to college athletics, and what they’re choosing to gain and sacrifice with this type of college experience. For the student athlete, the college experience can be markedly different than it is for non-athletes.
Do your research...Ask about your chosen school's expectations of its athletes. It won't take long to gauge whether you'll win a national championship, but will you be allowed to study abroad?
